Find defects or measure thickness with high-frequency sound pulses

Ultrasonic Testing

High-frequency sound pulses (0.5-10MHz) are sent into materials to find defects or measure thickness. The reflected sound is processed by an instrument where the result is displayed on a monitor. To be able to carry out this type of testing and to be able to evaluate the results in a reliable way, well-trained and experienced technicians are required.
Advantages:
  • Detects contained defects in materials
  • Detects inclusions in welds
  • Detects delaminations in materials
  • Can try rough thicknesses
Limitations:
  • Reference standards are required
  • Some materials (austenitic) eg stainless require extensive references
  • May be limited by the shape of the test object
